What are the Signs of Spiritual Awakening? How does one know that one is progressing in sadhna? By Rohit Anand. (Kriya Yogi and Tantra Sadhka).
Though every individual spiritual evolution may reflect different signs of progress but here are some of the sure signs of awakening which most of the yogis, tantra sadhaks, spiritual spirituals come across on the path to self realization or god realization. Peace, cheerfulness, contentment, dispassion, fearlessness, unperturbed state of mind under all conditions, indicate that you are advancing in the spiritual path.Spiritual progress is not measured by siddhis or powers but only by the depth of your bliss in meditation sessions. These are some of the sure tests of your spiritual progress.
Is your interest in inner spiritual activity and outer sadhna increasing everyday?
Does it means leading a spiritual life mean to your consciousness a matter of great joy, a delight for transcending the happiness that the world of vital pleasures affords you or offers you?
Have your personal awareness come to a possession of a sense of peace and strength which men who are not aspirants do not find in their everyday lives.
Do you get a feeling or be certain that your powers of discrimination and light of thoughts have been steadily growing recently?
Is your life being gradually led to such experiences which reveal to you the operation of a will and intelligence other than your own, the will and intelligence of the omnipresent Lord?
A sadhka or a spiritual aspirant will start to have a disease free body and mind, the excretions of the body will be scanty and the voice will become serene and sweet. the face of a yogi becomes brilliant, the eyes will be lustrous if celibacy and purity is attained. He or she will become discriminative in its approach with no attraction for worldly matters. The yogi develops universal love, vairagya with less of egoism and engage more in selfless service. Every worldly temptation that is resisted or given up, every evil thought that is curbed, every materialistic desire that is renounced, every bitter word or untruth that is withheld or given up, every noble virtues that is developed, every noble sublime thought that is cultivated over a period of time, adds to the development of spiritual will-force, good progress in reaching out to spiritual goal, and attainment of eternal bliss and immortality.
The whole process of spiritual awakening is comprised of several stages in anyone's life, as the kundalini rises and passes through the various chakras in astral body. It takes quite some time to become fully stabilized in its ascension, but if one has a deep understanding of tantra, yoga, chakras or kundalini then the transition process can be managed successfully without any serious issues.
The initial stages awakening of kundalini is followed by the experience of beautiful light in bhrumadhya, the eyebrow or kuthastha center. Usually this develops in a very mild way over an extended period of time and therefore does not precipitate any sudden agitation or disturbance in the body or at different levels. After some time, a yogi or a sadhaka feels that the appetite for food and sleep gradually decreases and it is not as it was before and the mind becomes quieter.
There is another prior guidance or a warning which heralds the experience of awakening of kundalini. In kriya yoga and tantra sadhna it is very clearly indicated that when nadis of ida and pingala flow simultaneously for a long period of time, and sushumna begins to flow then one should be prepared for a spiritual event or spiritual experience that might happen anytime.
Therefore it is important that one should be well conversant with swara yoga which is the ancient science of the breath cycles in hindu shastras, and keep a close watch over the breathing process that goes in the body. The breathing patterns in the nostrils normally changes every fourth day, according to the cycles of the moon, but when yogi experiences that both nostrils have been functioning equally well for at least 15 days, that is an advance prediction of an impending spiritual evolution.
When the actual shakti awakening happens one may feel there is an explosion in the realm of experiences and there are symptoms which are sometimes very difficult to understand for ordinary person unless helped by experienced ones or the guru. The most unique and common experience is the release of energy like an electric shock from the bottom of the spinal cord, as if it were connected to an electrical power point. Some of the other symtoms of can be that of burning sensation in muladhara chakra and energy passing up and down through sushumna nadi. Sometimes you hear the divine sounds of drums, flutes, bells, birds, celestial music, or you may even think you can hear peacocks singing with no peacock around, these sonds usually emanates from chakras. You may have a very momentary sensation of sitting outside in the middle of a monsoon shower, and there can also be the sensation of dark clouds in continual movement overhead and the sound of thunder.
At times you will feel that body is so light and you may even visualize your spinal cord as a fluorescent light. It is common to feel illumination within, as if hundreds of little lights were burning inside your body. This is one side of getting to know the spiritual progress.
The other side is that all the anger, passions and suppression's come out if you had any. Sometimes you are so filled with fears that you can't sleep, sometimes for days together you have nothing in your mind but sex, at other times you can't think of anything but food. However, all these symptoms pass within a few days or weeks.
Some people develop psychic powers when they are on spiritual or yogic path. They develop clairvoyance, telepathy, psycho telekinesis, clairaudience, reading other thoughts and the ability to heal, seeing the future, flashes of previous births etc., and this brings a lot of temptations. However, this is a phase and it will pass away.
Sometimes spiritual aspirants experience great headaches when kundalini shakti is in the awakening process, however, this does not mean that all headaches relates to kundalini arousal. And not everybody will have headaches but generally speaking, those who have had married life do not have this experience. It is usually only those who have not had any kind of sexual interactions or practiced celibacy who experience headaches with the advent of kundalini awakening. By : Shri Rohit Anand.
